Functions of Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria
The functions of the Council as a statutory professional regulatory body are as stipulated in Section 4 of Act 11 2003 which include the following:
Functions of the Council
- To conduct examinations for Technicians and Assistants.
- To regulate the practice of Medical Laboratory Science in Nigeria
To determine from time to time the standard of knowledge and skill to be attained by persons seeking to become Medical Laboratory Scientists, Medical Laboratory Technicians and Medical Laboratory Assistants (referred to as “Scientists’, ‘Technicians’ and ‘Assistants’). - To regulate the training of Scientists, Technicians and Assistants in any institutions in Nigeria and give periodic accreditation to institutions.
- To provide and maintain separate register for Scientists, Technicians and Assistants.
- To regulate the production, importation, sales and stocking of diagnostic laboratory reagents and chemicals.
- To assess, evaluate and register foreign graduates of Medical Laboratory Science.
- To inspect regulate and accredit Medical Laboratories (Public and Private).
- To perform such other functions as may be conferred on it by the Act.

Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria Profession Examination
The council of medical laboratory science of Nigeria professional examination comprises of Eleven (11) questions, out of which you must attempt a maximum of Nine 9 questions in 5 and half an hour or (5 hour; 30 minutes)
These questions are divided into two papers:
Paper 1 – Written Paper
Maximum Time Allowed = 2hrs 30mins.
Total Number of Questions given = Six (6).
Total Number of Questions to Attempt = Four (4).
Marking Scheme = Each Questions Carries 20 Marks.
Paper 2 – Practical Paper
Maximum Time Allowed – 3 hours.
Total Number of Questions given = Five (5).
Total Number of Questions to Attempt = All.
Marking Scheme = Each Questions Carries 20 Marks.
Although you may have 5 hour, 30 minutes shared between the two papers (paper 1 and 2) to answer 9 questions,
you would still be overwhelmed by time if you haven’t ground yourself to get familiar with the question be set.
